Future Plans
I am currently an Economics major.  By doing all of this research I have realized that The marketing department is acquiring many layoffs and does not have a large outlook for 2012, which is when i graduate.  This research helped me decide what I am really interested in, and I am comfortable with my major switch. Marketing is too broad to study on its own.  You need plans, and a specific job that you want to really have the motivation to go far in your career.  Marketing allows many jobs and many fields, but it requires years of schooling to become competitive. I have decided that is not for me.

Spring Break Festivities!
I was planning on having the most exciting spring break yet this year, although I had a few omens that led me to believe it would be the worst. It started of with a trip to Los Angeles, California, then ended with a weekend of family and friend time at home. Firstly,  my friend's brother drove her to my apartment in Kent, so she could spend the night.  Then the following morning we would get on our flight to our first stop, Detroit.  Well, it sounds easy, but that night ended up with a towed car, a night full of money and sleeping arrangement problems.  Dideveryone know that if your car gets towed it is 149 dollars?

After that fiasco, my friend and I got on the plane to Detroit.  We had very little layover there, so we found our gate designated on our ticket, and wen to the restroom, to only come back to an empty terminal.  We run to the lady at the front and she said our gate had changed and our plane has already took off. Tears started rolling and panic set in.  We were in Detroit, with little money, and no other flights to LA.  After we took a frew minutes to pull ourselves back together, we walked sadly to the terminal where rescheduled flights were made.  Many people were there argueing and crying to the attendants up front, my friend and I decided to be cool, calm, and collected.  We walk up and state our case, and the lady calls someone and quickly hangs up after. She sent us to a flight that had been three hours delayed, and told us to run.  So that we did.  There were six people in front of us waiting to get on this plane, with no boarding pass, therefore we were not hopeful.  We were the last one they got too, and let us on in seperated seats, which we did not complain.  We run onto the plane full of joy, to find that my seat has been taken, and we were practically being pushed off the plane.  As we started walking out, a man asked where we were going, because there was an extra seat in first class. Our spirits were once again lifted and we both sat down, my friend in coach, and me in first class.  I can't really complain about that, things were starting to look up.

When we got to Los Angeles, with a welcoming greeting from my friend and his friends, we find out we don't have a car. Anywhere you want to go in LA is at least 30 minutes away, a car was much needed.  I was noticing a pattern in all of these things going wrong, and finally felt the underlying frusteration I  have been holding in the whole trip.  But afterwards we came up with a solution, and all was well with the rest of the weekend.

The omens did not stop us from having a good time. I learned that as long as you don't let the little things bring your attitude down about something that is supposed to be amazing, then misforutnes will  never matter in life.  Staying positive is key, because I knew all of the mistakes and misfortunes that did happen, could be fixed if we just kept our heads up.

When I found my first source for my research paper, I knew it was a good one for two reasons.  First, It was an online book article, that had a credible author and all the information that I needed to cite it. I even looked it up on amazon to see if the book was still around and in stock.  Secondly, it had all the information I needed in great detail.  It was exactly what I was researching and even gave me more ideas for my paper.

Whenever I look up sources through Google Scholar, or the Kent state Library website, I know they will give me credible sources that I can rely on, which is a big factor in deciding what sources I will use.  Any type of source that gives me a substantial amount of credible information that directly relates to my topic, I will obviously use.

Thesis Statements
1. I have been enrolled in quite a few Business courses in a High school and College, and each professor I've had has had a negative and laughable comment to make about the integrity of Marketing: I want to uncover why that is.

2. "Advertising is the art of making whole lies out of half truths.” Edgar A. Shoeff

3.  A polition and author, Stephen Leacock said "Advertising may be described as the science of arresting the human intelligence long enough to get money from it."

4. The integrity of Marketing has been questioned by not only business professionals, but also by my  Business professors.  I want to uncover the truths and misunderstandings about the field I may be in for the rest of my life.

Introductory Lecture on Marketing
If I were to give a lecture about Marketing I would start off by applying it to our everyday life.  I would bring fliers and examples of Tv commercials in class that everyone would recognize.  This would prove my first point that we are being exposed to marketing strategies everyday, and can even point out certain advertisements to certian products.  This would lead me to my  next point that we buy brands that are most exposed to us.  I would then explain various strategies when it comes to price, product, place and promotion that marketers think about to expose their product effectivelya dn to the right people.

The 2 Questions
The first and major question I want to scope out is: Is marketing a social science or a business objective?  This question was highly debated, and the definition of  "marketing" is still under scrutiny.  I want to uncover the reasons and points of each side of the argument.  To this day the term "marketing" is not clear.
The second question is how important is the Marketing department to a company and its objectives? This question is easily answered as there would be no selling of the product or relationship between buyer and seller without marketing.  Its the social force of a company and the way they reach out to their market on a personal level.

Question Source

Hunt, Shelby D. "The Nature and Scope of Marketing." Journal Of Marketing 40.3 (1976): 17-28. Web. 18 Feb 2010.

The Nature and Scope of Marketing by  Shelby D Hunt,  relates to my question, is Marketing a social science or a business activity? The first controversy was with the definition of Marketing.  It restricted the feild to only business activity, when really it applies to any type of organization or person.  There  has not yet been a solidified version of the defintion of Marketing.  It is a broad field that can only be defined by the company it works for.
For each sector of busines, whether its macro ecomonics, micro econmoics, or non profit, Marketing is used in different ways and has different roles in business or socially.  Hunt is basically telling us that it is a flexable feild that yeilds to what the corporation wants from it.
